While this 5-star resort is quite large (150 villas, 80 over water), the feeling at all the villas is very, very private so it’s great for honeymooners and couples. With 10 restaurants and an enormous spa, it’s not just the rooms that are big. Accommodations include wine cellars, rain showers, and glass floors to see the water below and guest service is a huge priority here. Resort activities include everything from water skiing to snorkeling to sailing so you can work off all those calories [read more]

It almost doesn’t matter which of the three different overwater villas you choose to take here as you’ll get the same impeccable service for which the Four Seasons is known. As might be expected rooms here are large and each has a private sundeck and activities include a center for teenagers with video games, televisions, and magazines, a children’s program, yoga lessons, and surfing lessons. Yes, the cost is high but the experience is incredible.

As you would expect from a Four Seasons, this is a 5-star facility with the perks to go with it. Located on an exceptionally beautiful private island, this Four Seasons offers 40 overwater villas, all of which are incredibly spacious. While it’s a super-romantic setting, there are also four swimming pools as well as kids’ facilities and even a place specifically designed for teenagers. Additionally, there is a marine discovery center, banana boating, surf school, and a state-of-the-art gym. [read more]

For a 4-star facility, the Filitheyo offers some excellent rates and a resort with plenty of things to do. The enormous 16 over water villas (there are also 109 regular villas), have private verandas and even swings. Additionally there’s a diving center, a library, a spa, and a couple of shops in case you’re in the mood for a little retail therapy. Everything is on one of the Maldives’ most remote private islands so you’ll really feel as if you’re away from it all here.

Although many activities at this resort involve a separate fee, the Fihalhohi is a great value for the money and with 150 rooms, it’s one of the Maldives’ biggest private island facilities. There are only 12 overwater bungalows but there are many activities to keep you going like water skiing, canoeing, and entertainment. Certainly not a luxury place, but a reasonable place in a great setting.

It’s not cheap, but the chain to which this new resort belongs has such a sterling reputation that a good time is all but guaranteed. With 52 water villas that come in three different sizes (big, bigger, and biggest), there’s a lot from which to choose and the amenities range from in-room wine coolers to Nespresso machines. Not to be outdone by nearby resorts, the Dusit Thani Maldives also boasts the largest swimming pool in the Maldives, making it a great option for those with kids.

The 25 overwater villas here which weren’t added until 2011 are decorated in an Italianate style, making it a bit unusual. While the prices may seem a bit on the high side, they’re all inclusive with the exception of some activities. Although there are no TVs (you won’t need them once you see how great the reef is here), there is wifi in case you can’t resist the urge to get online. Each room has a specific member of staff assigned to it so you’ll be sure to have everything you need.

Known for having one of the best reefs in the area, Diamonds is a great place for serious divers or even anyone who wants to just be wowed. Whitewashed from top to bottom, this is a stylish resort with 25 water villas and 46 on the beach. Not surprisingly, this resort offers everything from a sports center to snorkeling trips and while some activities do cost extra the all-inclusive prices include alcohol so you don’t need to worry about ordering that second drink.

A great option for adults who really want to be pampered (and spend the money to do so), this new facility is everything a 5-star resort should be. With 110 villas, 86 of which are overwater, this is the latest in a chain that is known for making its guests very, very happy. The resort has all the usual activities plus local places that offer everything from big game fishing to deserted island tours. Not a great option for those with kids, but for honeymooners or couples, this is ideal. The Constance [read more]

We hope you like to stay active because there is a seemingly endless list of things to do here, not all of which involve water. You can kayak, snorkel, dive, swim, visit the spa, shop in the high-end on-site clothing store, dance (yes, there’s a DJ), and if you pull something doing all that there’s even an on-site doctor! There are also tons of activities close to the resort like dolphin watching, sunset cruises, and even sunset fishing. Every one of the 57 overwater villas has its own plunge [read more]

Honeymooners take note: there is an adults-only part of the island, making it perfect for those who don’t want the frenzy of being around kids. Of their 150 villas, 71 are overwater, each with a different set of amenities. From ocean-view bathtubs to sundecks with stairs that go right into the water to Jacuzzis with built-in TVs, to Phillipe Stark appointments, there are some really great perks here. Unplug. That’s the mantra of the Dhuni Kolhu. With limited in-room wires (meaning wifi and TV), you’ll be forced to calm down whether you like it or not (although if you’re really desperate you can request some amenities like TV). Focusing on water instead of work, this resort offers 14 overwater villas, each with a personal butler and private plunge pool. With plenty of activities including beach soccer, a gym, water skiing, and just about everything else you’d expect, you can really focus [read more]

The 24 overwater bungalows here are semi-detached so while there are no rooms on stilts, this is still a good value. This 4-star hotel has reliable restaurants as well as features like raquetball, canoeing, and even ecotours. With 88 additional rooms, this is a large resort with plenty to do. That said, with few nighttime options, this is probably for the guest who wants a more serene experience.

The emphasis here is on relaxation, so it’s probably a better bet for couples rather than families. With 70 overwater rooms this remote hotel is located on a 6-acre island and while the resort features are somewhat limited to the usual (diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, etc.), guests can access other nearby islands for a better selection of things to do. That said, the snorkeling here is considered above average so that may not even be necessary.

Get ready to have some fun! This 115-room property (60 of those are overwater), has no end of activities to keep guests occupied. Moderately priced, it even offers its own surfing beach, not to mention live entertainment, snorkeling, volleyball, kayaking, and even a disco for the night owls. With lots of dining options, this all-inclusive resort is a very good value for the money.
